Introduction:
The new year opened with the much-anticipated Cambridgeshire Derby as the Peterborough Phantoms faced off against the newly formed Cambridge Kodiaks. In their first season, the Kodiaks were set to test the Phantoms in a match that promised excitement and competitive hockey. The rink was alive with the energy of supporters from both sides, creating an electric atmosphere for the first game of 2024.
First Period:
The game started at a blistering pace, with both teams demonstrating their determination to take the lead. The Phantoms created promising scoring chances, notably when Sarah Rees (#40), supported by a slick pass from Kodie Duguid (#5, sponsored by Ask2Build), fired a shot that the Kodiaks’ goalie narrowly saved, the puck teetering agonisingly close to crossing the goal line. As the period progressed, Phantoms’ Georgia Whittemore (#33) was called for elbowing at 14:54, adding a challenging twist to the Phantoms’ defensive efforts. The Phantoms and Kodiaks exchanged hard hits and fast plays, but neither team could break through the other's defences. The goalies were tested but held firm, keeping the score level as the period ended.
Second Period:
Intensity on the ice ramped up as the teams returned, continuing to battle for the upper hand. The Phantoms, maintaining their aggressive play, created several scoring opportunities but were met with equal resilience from the Kodiaks. Phantoms’ Caitlin Barraclough (#27) and Ruby Allen (#9) Sponsored by Simone@Box7) fought hard in front of the net a few times, nearly securing a goal for their line. Defensive dynamo Stacie Horn (#13, sponsored by Buds Fitness & Hercules) launched a decisive pass to Whittemore (#33), who hustled towards the net with purpose, but despite her tenacious efforts on the rebound, the Kodiaks’ netminder stopped the threat. Amidst this intense play, the Kodiaks were called for multiple infractions including Kodiaks’ #2 Josie Milton for elbowing at 22:15, #6 Saara Karvonen for a high stick at 22:31 and #91 Ellie Goldstone for holding at 22:49. The period continued with more penalties as Phantoms’ Emily Lock (#2) found herself in the penalty box for holding at 26:06. Once again, Kodiaks’ #6 Karvonen found herself in trouble, receiving another 2 minutes for body checking at 27:17. The physical play in this period added to the crowd's anticipation as the teams remained locked in a stalemate.
Third Period:
The third period was full of competitive play and both teams refused to let up. In a noteworthy breakaway, Barraclough (#27) showcased her sheer drive after picking up a puck liberated by Liberty Malachowski (#24), but a mid-ice collision abruptly halted her charge. More penalties were called in the third period, with Kodiaks’ #81 Katie Goodwin received a penalty for roughing at 47:54. Ultimately, the deadlock was finally broken at 51:00 when the Cambridge Kodiaks capitalised on a scramble during a delayed penalty in front of the Peterborough net, sneaking in the game's only goal. The Phantoms pushed back with vigour, seeking an equaliser, but the Kodiaks' defence stood strong, keeping the Phantoms at bay. The final minute of the game saw Phantoms’ Hana Mészárošová (#15 sponsored by Box7) receive a penalty (59:00).
Injuries:
The match was not without its unfortunate moments, with a Peterborough player sustaining a head injury that necessitated leaving the ice for hospital treatment. The Kodiaks also experienced misfortune, with a player suffering a broken ankle. The Phantoms extend their heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured players on both teams.
Conclusion:
Despite their first defeat of the season, the Phantoms are proud of their performance against a strong Cambridge side. They eagerly anticipate the return fixture later in the season.
