Peterborough Phantoms Women 1-9 Swindon Topcats: Opening day loss for rebranded Peterborough side

Peterborough Phantoms Women dropped their first game of the new WNIHL Division 1 (South) season as they fell 9-1 to Swindon Topcats at Planet Ice Peterborough (October 16).

It was Phantoms Women who got off to a great start in the game as Elouise Porter saw her breakaway attempt saved by Topcats goaltender Mali Easton. Easton was also on hand to stop shots from both Kodie Duguid and Hana Meszarosova in the opening exchanges.

Ellie Wallace forced a good stop from Phantoms goaltender Katie Plumb before Annabelle Cuss then fired her team into the lead with a shot that just evaded Plumb’s blocker.

The visitors doubled their lead when Ellie Wallace found the net, virtually from the restart. Peterborough captain Sara Dawson saw her goal-bound effort stopped at the second attempt by Easton. She also denied Emma McCarthy soon after.

Swindon kept piling the pressure on the Phantoms however Plumb stood tall in the Phantoms net, making save after save – the most notable was a 1v1 with Ellie Wallace. Plumb was beaten again soon after with Joy Scott-Russell capitalising from the resulting puck drop.

Porter then put Phantoms on the board with a shot over Easton’s blocker and into the net. However, the home side’s joy was short lived as Ellie Wallace scored her second, lifting the puck over Plumb’s left shoulder.

Ellie Wallace then completed her hat-trick inside the first two minutes of the second period with a wrap around.

Phantoms then found themselves in penalty trouble. First it was Porter who found herself in the penalty box for a body check, which the home side successfully killed. Next it was the turn of Sherrie Booth, for a body check, and again the penalty was successfully killed.

Swindon picked up a penalty of their own with Katie Edginton going off for a body check, however they made light of the situation with Cuss scoring a short-handed goal. The visitors then extended their lead further with a second short-handed goal scored by Leah Wallace, after a deflection wrong footed Plumb.

Booth, again, found herself in the box for another body check, once again Phantoms successfully killed the penalty. Swindon’s eighth goal came in the last minute of the period, Edginton cutting inside to fire past Plumb.

The final 20 minutes saw the visitors pick up a couple of penalties as they lost Edginton for the majority of the period when she picked up a 2+10 for a body check and Alice Edmonds got 2 for tripping, however both penalties were killed.

Swindon completed the scoring in the final stages when Holly Morris shot through traffic and the puck crept in at the near post.

The next game for Phantoms Women is an away trip to face the Solent Amazons (November 20, 6pm face off), before then returning home to play same opposition on December 11 (6pm).
