The anticipation was palpable as Peterborough Phantoms opened their season on home ice against the Streatham Storm. The energy and determination from both teams set the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating season in the Women's National Ice Hockey League 2. Delivering a stellar performance, the Phantoms triumphed with a 4-2 victory, setting an optimistic tone for their campaign ahead.
Period 1:
From the first puck drop, the intensity was undeniable. After a series of attacks on both ends, the Phantoms got ahead. At 10:16, Ruby Allen (#9) found the net, assisted by a sharp play from Laura Brooks (#19), registering the game's opening goal. This ignited the home crowd's spirits, but Streatham responded swiftly. At 17:45, Auguste Tomaseviciute (#6) levelled the score, fed by Laura Cope (#30).

Period 2:
The teams returned to the ice with evident ambition. Streatham momentarily edged ahead at 33:22 with Sorana Churchill (#10) scoring, assisted by Yeuk Ting Lau (#17). But the Phantoms retaliated with determination. At 35:26, after Ruby Allen (#9) sent a potent shot towards the net, Aimee Neaverson (#66) skilfully capitalised on the rebound, drawing the sides level at 2-2.

Period 3:
The Phantoms commenced the final period with renewed energy. At 45:52, Hana Mészárošová (#15) took advantage of an assist from Kodie Duguid (#5), putting the home team ahead. As the clock dwindled down, an awarded power play to the Phantoms saw Ruby Allen (#9) net her second goal of the evening at 54:14, with notable assists from Joanne Saville (#4) and Sarah Rees (#50). A strategic timeout by Streatham at 45:52 became a talking point, but the Phantoms' defence stood unbroken to the end.

Penalties:
Troubles flared early in the final period with Peterborough's Ruby Allen (#9) penalized for slashing at 47:09, and Georgia Whittemore (#52) called for interference at 47:23. Streatham's Alexis Butler (#65) faced a penalty for elbowing at 47:09. Francesca Thorogood (#40) was penalized for tripping at 53:12, and a bench penalty at 59:44 due to too many players on the ice rounded out the period's infractions.
Netminder Performance:
The evening saw Peterborough's Katie Plumb in spectacular form, recording 23 saves from 25 shots. Conversely, Streatham's Juliana Cudini made a commendable 27 saves on 31 shots.
