Introduction:
In a game that combined skill, strategy, and sheer physicality, the Peterborough Phantoms faced the Solent Amazons following a 2-2 draw against Streatham Storm last weekend. The match, which took place in Gosport, saw the Phantoms displaying determination in a high-intensity clash against the Amazons, marked by physical play and relentless competition.
First Period:
The Phantoms burst into the game with an early show of strength as Laura Brooks (#19) made her mark with a swift goal at 01:08, catching the Amazons off guard. The momentum continued with Hana Mészárošová (#15), sponsored by Box Seven, doubling the lead at 09:54 with a powerful unassisted goal. Not long after, Sarah Rees (#40), benefiting from a precise assist by Georgia Whittemore (#33), found the back of the net at 14:45. Mészárošová (15) wasn't finished, adding another at 15:24, followed by Brooks (#19), securing her second goal of the period at 18:12. The Amazons fought back, with Charlotte Johnson (#91) scoring at 06:49, assisted by Lucy Gates (#63), followed by a goal from Joanna Orlik (#23) at 16:35, but they couldn't halt the Phantoms' offensive drive.
Second Period:
The game took a rougher turn in the second period, reflected by a flurry of penalties against the Phantoms. Georgia Whittemore (#33), a key player in the first period, found herself sidelined for checking at 24:35, followed by Mészárošová (#15) for roughing at 26:58 and Ruby Allen (#9) also for roughing at 30:16. Despite being short-handed, the Phantoms refused to allow the Amazons to score and maintained their defensive play. Whittemore (#33) completed her ‘Gordie Howe Hat Trick’ (a goal, assist and penalty) with a goal of her own at 21:25. The Amazons' persistence paid off when Lauren Kenton (#71) netted a goal at 37:22, but they still faced a formidable deficit against the Phantoms.
Third Period:
The third period maintained the intensity with Mészárošová (#15), assisted by Captain Sara Dawson (#3), showcasing her scoring prowess and completing her hat trick at 43:13. Soon after, Brooks (#19) also completed her hat trick, scoring for the third time at 44:51, assisted by Allen (#9). The Amazons responded with Orlik (#23) adding her second of the night at 43:30, and Hannah Driver (#19) scoring at 51:44. As the clock wound down, the Phantoms were not finished, and Kodie Duguid (#5) delivered a solo goal for the Phantoms at 50:16. Amidst the action, Essie Laugharne (#94) was penalised for tripping at 54:49, underscoring the period's competitive edge.
